INTERDISCIPLINARY CENTRE FOR POLICE STUDIES
ABOUT THE CENTER
With the advent of grave internal security challenges on the one hand and significant professional advances on the other, the age old generalist paradigm of policing has changed considerably. Policing today has become an extremely professional activity. This calls for a highly skilled police force, constantly upgrading itself, by generating ideas not merely from within the force but also from outside. The skill set required today from a police man entails cutting edge training programmes generated as a product of rigorous academic study and research. Streams of study like Police Sciences, Forensic Psychology, Criminology, Cyber Forensics etc should essentially form an integral component of such training. Many of the said streams necessitate multi disciplinary research in law, social sciences, pure sciences and police practices.
The Inter Disciplinary Centre for Police Studies has been established as a collaborative effort of the Government of Kerala and the National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS). The Kerala Police Academy, Thrissur, Police Training College, Thiruvananthapuram and the Forensic Science Laboratory, Thiruvananthapuram are the other partner institutions of this venture. The NUALS shall have academic autonomy as regards the various initiatives of the Centre. The Centre would evaluate emerging internal security problems and help update the professional skills of policemen to meet global challenges. It is sought to promote multidisciplinary research in police studies, as well as provide avenues for higher learning for police-personnel tailor made to their needs. The Centre would also explore the possibilities of academic collaboration with institutions having similar objectives in India and abroad.
The Centre was inaugurated on 3rd March 2011 by Prof (Dr.) N.K. Jayakumar, Vice-Chancellor, NUALS at the Kerala Police Academy, Thrissur. Shri.
