CENTRE FOR HEALTH LAW AND POLICY
Health law is an important tool that plays a critical role in shaping the health behaviour of people and structuring the role and responsibilities of government for protecting right to health of people. Health law mainly focuses on the authority of the government at various jurisdictional levels to improve the health of the general population within societal limits and norms. It also analyzes legal issues in public health practice and also the public health effects of legal practice.
The Centre for Health Law and Policy is an interdisciplinary Centre established on 8th Aug 2014 at National University of Advanced Legal Studies as its ninth Centre for study and research under the leadership of Dr. V.R Jaydevan.The Centre was inaugurated by the Hon'ble Minister for Education of Kerala Mr. Abdu Rabb. The Centre aims to encourage, promote and support innovative and important scholarship including teaching, research, consultancy and advocacy in areas of health care law. For that the Centre strive to
- Foster collaborative links across institutions and fields related to health law,
- Collaborate with professional associations and bodies engaged in promotion and protection of health of people,
- Undertake research projects on various issues coming under health law and policy,
- Organize training programme for targeted groups,
- Respond to the needs of people by structuring legal framework and by analyzing impact of health policies,
- Sponsor conferences, seminars, workshops, lectures and other similar activities,
- Arrange visits of distinguished scholars from India and abroad,
- Publish journal, papers, and other works, as well as supporting other means of dissemination of scholarly publications.
NATIONAL WORKSHOP ON RIGHT TO EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE
The National workshop on right to emergency medical care was organized as part of the inauguration of the Centre on 9th Aug 2014 with the participation of delegates from different law colleges and medical colleges. The workshop was resourced by Speakers such as Dr.Balakrishnan K, Professor, Thrissur Medical College, Dr.ImronSubhan, Consultant, Appolo Hospital,Dr. M.C Pramodan, Associate Professor, School of Legal Thought, Dr.Rajeev Jayadevan , Secretary, Indian Medical Association.
INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON ACCESS TO MEDICINE AND NOVEL MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIES - HEALTH, HUMAN RIGHTS AND IPR PERSPECTIVES
The Centre along with the Centre for Human Rights (CHR) and Centre for Intellectual Property Rights (CIPR) organised a two day International Seminar on 'Access to Medicines and Novel Medical Technologies-Health , Human Rights and IPR Perspectives' on 17th and 18th August , 2015. The Seminar was about issues of human rights and application of intellectual property rights in health care and various medical technologies in the context of globalisation and changing IPR regime. The Seminar was chairedby eminent personalities/academicians such as Dr.CalvinHo , WHO Consultant and Faculty of National University of Singapore, Dr.VesselinPopovski, Executive Head of Jindal Global University , Ms.LeenaMeghaney , South Asian Head, Medecins Sans Frontieres Access to Medicine Campaign, Dr.UnniKarunakara, International President , Medecines Sans Frontieres, Dr.Habib Hassan, Faculty , Public Health Foundation of India , Dr.Shraff, Faculty, University of Darmstadt, Ms. Aashna Mehta, Research Associate , Public Health Foundation of India , Dr.Bismi GopalaKrishnan, Faculty , Kerala University.
The Centre has started the preparation of a handbook on 'Rights and Liabilities of Medical and Paramedical Professionals and Providers' for creating legal awareness among private medical and paramedical professionals and institutions with the assistance of the Research Associates of the Centre , Ms. Priya R and Ms. Siji .
